Richmond Castle Visit

Richmond Castle, located in Sri Lanka, was built by philanthropist Padikara Mudali Nanayakkara Rajawasala Appuhamilage Don Arthur de Silva Wijesinghe Siriwardena (1889–1947). Inspired by an Indian castle owned by his schoolmate, Raja Rajeswara Sethupathi, Siriwardena secretly commissioned plans and constructed the two-storey mansion with 16 rooms, 99 doors, and 34 windows. Luxurious materials were imported: Italian tiles, Burmese teak, Scottish stained glass, and English iron fittings. Siriwardena lived there with his wife, Clarice Matilda Maude Suriyabandara, though they had no children. After his death, he entrusted the property to the Public Trustee, requesting it be transformed into a children’s home.
